Montbeton

Municipality of Greater Montauban
A rural village where life is good and which has been awarded its 2nd flower!
Distinguished by its constantly renewed creativity, this award reflects its excellent living environment.

Did you know?

Its Latin origin is unmistakable: ” Montebetone”.

The “mont” evokes a high place, while the family name of Germanic origin, ” Bette / Betton”, is found in both Oc and Oïl domains.

Montbéton exists in the Marne! The local pronunciation in Occitan is ” mounbétou”, with the accent, of course!

Treasures

heritage

Since the foundation stone was laid in 1878 and blessed in 1879 by Monseigneur Legan, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption has stood proudly over the village.

The warm tones of Lavergne’ s stained glass windows, installed in 1881, and the beautiful rose window, allow natural light to flood the church’s clear, uncluttered decor.

This softness is complemented by the precious light of gilded chandeliers from the salon of theParis mansion of the Marquis de Bellissen (sponsor of the church and the Bellissen center, formerly an orphanage). The high altar, commissioned in Angers, and the altars, made in Montauban, gracefully order the space.
