Greater Montauban: a land of remarkable biodiversity
a mosaic of unspoilt landscapesMontauban between city and nature
In Montauban, the main biodiversity reservoirs are located to the south-east of the city and along the Tarn and Tescou rivers. Ecological corridors cross the city to the north-west and reach other reservoirs outside its boundaries.
In Montauban: biodiversity is pampered! The zero phyto approach
Since 2017, phytosanitary products have been banned in gardens and vegetated areas accessible to the public. As a result, the city’s parks and gardens department has replaced these products with the implementation of so-called soft and selective alternative techniques (mechanical, thermal weeding). This is a way of managing green spaces that is closer to nature and more respectful of the environment.
In addition, in certain areas of the town, such as around the Ingréo swimming pool and opposite the Marché Gare, a differentiated mowing system has been introduced, so that certain areas are mowed only once or twice a year. This not only encourages the growth of certain orchids, but also enriches the flora and provides sufficient resources for pollinating insects.
Integrated control
This so-called “soft” technique makes it possible to combat certain pests by using their natural enemy. Outdoors, ladybugs are released at the Roseraie to combat aphids. Along the coulée verte and the banks of the Tarn river, the installation of nests of a particular species of wasp limits the proliferation of the white leafhopper.
Unique to Montauban
A giant floating nest in the heart of the town: Ile de la Pissote and its heron colony
This island, stretching some 500 meters downstream from the Pont Vieux, owes its name to a small stream that flows into the Tarn between the mouth of the Tescou and the Laguarrigue stream. While only two centuries ago the island was home to bathing establishments, it is now forbidden to moor there. The island is even part of a Natura 2000 zone, i.e. an area of outstanding flora and fauna, the conservation of which must be compatible with human activities. Every year, from March onwards, dozens of herons of various species come here to nest, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
An educational booklet
To discover the wealth of Montauban’s natural heritage, download the Montauban entre ville et nature booklet.
The purpose of this booklet is to introduce you to some forty species that you may come across in the city, and to help you identify them. Above all, its aim is to arouse curiosity and remind us that we are just one species among many.
