La Maison du Crieur welcomes “During a dream”, by the dreamlike and organic painter Maxime Cohen.

Maxime Cohen draws his inspiration from a changing state of the body and perceptions as sleep approaches, when thoughts intertwine with dreams (or nightmares), when a sudden memory comes to consciousness before the senses abandon themselves. and everything seems to be gradually distorting.

The artist exhibits from January 31 to February 25 at the Maison du Crieur: she gives a glimpse of what is hidden on the edge of loss of consciousness, while the character passes, from painting to painting, from objects to places, and ends by hiding in the thin gaps that cut the image... like between half-closed eyelids, on the threshold of sleep.
Through a dreamlike and organic painting, enigmatic and full of softness, all in tones of gray, delicate lights and powdery shadows, dream and reality meet, an experience so intimate and yet universal, outside of time. Painter of the in-between, of the tipping point and of suspension, she sums up her approach as follows: “the essential is inevidence, the third choice, that of free movement”.
Narration is also central to his project: it cuts the image and separates it into successive shots which are organized at different depths. Then, the story takes shape, within a space where the artist enjoys endlessly constructing and recomposing times and developments.
Maxime Cohen, his journey
Initially trained in the arts, Maxime Cohen cultivates a sensitivity for the semantics of fragmentation, palimpsest, and depths in a pictorial composition. When she entered the Beaux-arts de Bourges, she developed a practice of photography and photograms. One of these photographs became a model for a painting project: she then discovered oil on canvas.
His favorite themes: the mask, the segmented story, the secret, the transformation... which make his images float in an atmosphere of strangeness. Painting takes over other mediums, and she devotes her thoughts to the creation of a surrealist universe inhabited by a strange half-deer, half-human character who transforms according to his appearances.
